This course thought me so many things thanks to professor Dr. Serena. Being this my first semester attending this university I was nervous on what to expect from professors and things work. Dr. Serena as he begun the first class of the semester, he made it very welcoming to everyone in the class. He did not care about were anyone came from or how we look. He wanted us to be the same way and respect everyone the same way even if someone had different ideas and beliefs as the rest of the class. His point was that how the world works and wanted us to have all points of view when having a discussion because it benefited us on having a better learning experience and that how it was throughout our semester. In my personal experience this class help me because it made me to love where I came from. I was person that did believe that I did not belong in that university just because of where I came from. Dr. Serena made me love my roots and feel proud of what our people have accomplish while fighting for our rights. I used this motivation for my other courses I took while I attend California State University Monterey Bay because my shines started to fade away. I realize I was very privilege of earning my way to this university and was part on that class of students. I was not going to waste this opportunity and waste all the sacrifice many chicanx have done to get people like me to go school and earn higher education. For instance, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta were some of the people that invested their time to gain rights for the Chicano community. Also, Dr. Serena showed a documentary (Taking Back Our Schools) about how Chicanos students fought for this right and because of that fight I can earn my higher education. Thanks to Dr. Serena I was able to become more confident about myself and improve my lifestyle because of his life lessons.
