The journey for my service-learning course began on a Monday with favorite professor, Dr. Gomez (later in the semester I found out he was retiring and going to enjoy life after 25 years of being a teacher). It was a sad news, but he deserves every benefit that comes after his career because of all his hard work and dedication he has put in educating new generations. He begun the semester by asking us the question “Who are we” and “why are we the way we are”? He told us that the goal of this course was to try and find out the answers to these questions while doing our service. The place I decided to do my service what at an elementary hometown because it was close to my house and work and it was the best way to fit an extra activity on my schedule. The main reason was because I want to be a teacher and that my targeted grade level. I went to the principle and asked him to try and assign me with that grade level and it happen. I was assigned with second graders and I was a hands-on helper in class. I help students with their math, reading and writing assignments. The memory that will stay forever with me from this experience is that I meet this one student that we ended up being friends. On my first day of my service he called me over and asked me in Spanish “Sabes espanol”, asking me if I knew Spanish, I answer him en Spanish “Si, si hablo espanol”, the smile in his face I will never forget. This made me realize I had to make my dream of becoming a teacher a reality. From this experience, that you can see here, I learn that having a bilingual teacher is important because it allow them to communicate with her students in more than one language. For that reason, I believe teachers should be bilingual and have that ability to help the future generations. I love the experience and I have no doubt I would do this again in a heat beat. With this I would like to finish this and thank Dr. Gomez again for everything he did throughout my career and my journey at CSUMB. Thank you very much Dr. Gomez for your advice and help. I will really miss you.
